D.A. Beta

As I mentioned in my D.A. pitch, this is all a learning experience for me, and I think that the direction I’ve gone with my pitch is a testament to that. I have pretty much scraped a majority of what my proposal was for a few reasons. 1. I completely overestimated my skills when it has to do with anything technology related- I am hopeless. 2. The need to interview people is do able, however it can also be really frustrating to have to rely on someone else to complete your work. And 3. I’ve found a really interesting topic matter that I think is really worth exploring.

Below is a video about my new and improved, work in progress digital artefact.

Here is the link to my first blog post about the future that insects may play in in agriculture.

  1. Hey! I agree with the original feedback-ers and am super glad you downsized your idea to make it more achievable. It’s good that your original idea led to a more specific area to explore, and the impact of insects on those three areas of our future is super interesting. I’m sure you’ve done a lot of your research already, but I did find this ABC news article about how insects could be the key to dealing with the worlds waste (https://www.abc.net.au/news/rural/2018-05-10/insects-could-solve-the-worlds-waste-problems/9714190). I know a lot of research is often US-specific so this is a good Australian example and could be a good place to find more info 🙂
Good luck with the rest of your project!

  2. Hi Dakoda,

I think we both experienced some issues when we first planned to work on our DA. For my case, I have problem with time management as the editing took much longer than I expected, although I was quite proficient at AE and premiere 🙂 So don’t worry about that! Besides, if it’s too hard for you, just let it go and choose another more approachable method because your artefact’s development process should be guided by the fast, inexpensive,
simple, tiny [FIST] design principles. Writing blogs can be a good idea as long as you’re comfortable with it ! (I assumed your major is journalism so I think you’re very good at writing) and it’s also a good way to show your research findings to the audience. So I think it’s the most appropriate approach in terms of the nature of your DA.

I’m also glad that you decided to narrow down your topic idea to focus on the role of insects in different industry. I think that it’s a relevant topic to explore in your DA project as long as you refer to the role of insects in the future. Drawing on the influence of insects on different aspects of life in the past would also be a good point to fortify your findings.

Based on the three industries that you chose to explore, I’ve done some research online and have gathered some findings related to the roles of insects in different industries that I think would be relevant to your DA:

    • Future role of insects in medicine: https://cleantechrising.com/the-future-of-insect-based-protein/
    • Future role of insects in food and agriculture: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26908196
    • Future role of insects in environment: https://www.nsta.org/publications/news/story.aspx?id=50211

I hope they can help with your DA. I look forward to seeing more blog posts from your DA soon!

  3. It’s good to see that you’re playing to your strengths, weaknesses and interests. It seems like a very scientific kind of project, so I am not sure what kind of audiences might engage with your DA. SO maybe finding a niche and catering towards that will help you focus in on your target audiences. There is an aesthetic to very minimalistic and simple things. Maybe presenting your information in a keynote/power-point presentation might be the best way to do it, that way you wont lose out on bad quality cameras and it will still look visually appealing. Plus, there’s a lot of room for a different creative approach!
